A dental bridge allows us to restore missing teeth. A bridge is traditionally a three tooth device consisting of two crowns and a false tooth between. The crowns are customized to fit over a firm anchor, generally two healthy teeth on either side of the missing tooth, but we can also cover a dental implant. The device is cemented into place for a firm hold, allowing the patient to use the false tooth as they would their natural tooth they lost. A dental bridge is beneficial because it restores some chewing function and helps prevent neighboring teeth from shifting out of alignment. If teeth are allowed to shift out of control, it can create a variety of other problems with the jaw alignment; we want to prevent these issues.
Dental crowns are used to cap or encase a damaged tooth. Teeth can become damaged from decay or fracture. We want to protect the original structure and retain the tooth whenever possible. If a tooth has become weakened from endodontic therapy, also known as a root canal procedure, a large cavity, or breakage, we can restore the health of the tooth and restore its shape with a dental crown. Teeth that are protected with a crown often extend the life of the tooth by many years. This means better oral health for the patient and preventing other issues from occurring.
A dental implant is the only way to truly replace a missing tooth. We can fully replace the tooth because we are rebuilding the tooth from the foundation, recreating the root and providing a firm, solid foundation for the false tooth we can then place over the implant. A dental implant is a metal post that we surgically secure to the jawbone. Once healed, this post is a firm anchor allowing us to attach a tooth permanently without disrupting neighboring teeth.
Studies have found dental implants to be a highly successful form of dental restoration, with a high rate of success and appropriate for a wide range of patients, even those who are medically delicate. Dental implants can be used to retain a single tooth, multiple teeth, or even to permanently secure a full denture. Standard implant procedures can take months to complete, but there are options for denture patients that allow them to have the entire procedure completed in one day.
A full mouth restoration is always specifically customized to the patient. It may include the changing of old fillings, the placement of one or more dental implants, the placement of crowns, bridges or denture device. Often multiple restorations are done to bring the mouth back to health. We will work with the patient to design a plan that fits their needs.
