Your Oral Hygiene & Examinations
Mercer Island, WA
Taking good care of your mouth is essential for keeping it healthy and your smile beautiful. A big part of keeping your mouth healthy is with good oral hygiene practices at home. The American Dental Association recommends that you brush your teeth twice a day and floss at least once a day. In addition to your home care, regular professional dental care is also essential. At Goichi Shiotsu, DDS, we can help you to maintain your oral health with oral hygiene and dental cleanings and exams.
Helping You Maintain Your Oral Hygiene
The ADA recommends professional cleanings at least twice a year. This might not seem like much, but they are essential. Even if you brush and floss every day, there are some areas of your mouth that can be more difficult to clean properly. If you do not properly clean an area of your mouth, plaque and bacteria can continue accumulating, increasing your risk for cavities and gum disease. With professional cleanings, we can eliminate all buildup from the surfaces of your teeth, including the areas where you cannot effectively clean yourself.
Dental cleanings are very simple and straightforward. We begin by scraping the surfaces of your teeth. We work carefully to thoroughly eliminate plaque, bacteria, and other debris. We can even eliminate tartar or calcified plaque that cannot be brushed away. After scraping your teeth, we polish them. This is done with dental polish and electric handpiece. The polish contains abrasives that scrub your teeth, helping to clean them while also removing surface stains. Finally, we floss your teeth to eliminate plaque and bacteria from between your teeth as well as any debris or polish that has accumulated over the course of your cleaning.
The Importance of Exams
The ADA also recommends having your mouth professionally examined twice a year as well. These exams are typically done at the same appointment as your cleanings. Even if your mouth feels healthy, it is still important to have routine exams. This is because many oral health issues do not exhibit symptoms in their earliest stages.
You may have an issue developing, but you are completely unaware of it. By the time you notice symptoms, the issue has developed into something worse. With dental exams, we can check over your mouth and detect the earliest warning signs of many different oral health issues. The earlier issues are detected, the easier they typically are to treat. Additionally, earlier treatments tend to be less invasive.
Exams, like cleanings, are fairly straightforward. We look over the surfaces of your teeth, checking for signs of chips, cracks, wear, and cavities. We assess your gums for gum disease, checking for redness, swelling, periodontal pockets, and gum recession. We also look over the other soft tissues in your mouth, checking for signs of anything unusual. This is your oral cancer screening, and it is performed during every dental exam.
Another integral component of your exams is dental X-rays. These are images taken of your mouth that allow us to see the hidden areas of your mouth. We can spot cavities between your teeth, root damage, bone loss, bone fractures, abscesses, cysts, impacted teeth, and more. These images help us to get a complete picture of your mouth so that we can provide you with the best possible care.
