What Leads to Chipped Veneers in Most Cases?

Posted on 8/8/2022 by Dr. Shiotsu
What Leads to Chipped Veneers in Most Cases?Veneers are reliable oral appliances that you place over your teeth to protect their surface against damage. These oral appliances also help improve your smile. Generally, veneers are highly durable and will serve you for several years. While dental veneers do an effective job of restoring your smile, they are vulnerable to chipping. There are several causes of chipped veneers. Some of them include:

Biting Down On Hard Foods

When you bite down into hard foods, the impact can severe enough to cause chipping on your veneers. Some of the foods that can cause veneer chipping are ice and nuts. When you chew on such foods, you distort the position of dental veneers. This significantly increases the chances of breakages. Therefore, you should avoid eating hard foods when you have dental veneers. If you have to eat them, ensure they are thoroughly cooked and soft.

Clenching and Grinding

Chipped veneers can also be caused by clenching and grinding. Also known as bruxism, teeth grinding will exert excessive pressure on your teeth and cause breakages. There are different types of bruxism; sleep bruxism and awake bruxism. Sleep bruxism is the most common one, and it happens when you are asleep. Grinding your teeth when you have veneers will easily cause chips. Luckily, you can prevent such cases by wearing a mouth guard. Ensure you have a solid mouth guard that protects against the effects of grinding.

You could also have chipped veneers due to fall accidents. Therefore, you should be careful when engaging in aggressive activities to reduce the risk of accidents. You should also protect your mouth with a mouth guard. This will prevent any damage and helps keep your teeth intact. Keep in mind that veneers can last for many years if you take good care of them.
