Health Issues Associated with Poor Oral Hygiene

Posted on 12/23/2021 by Dr. Shiotsu
Health Issues Associated with Poor Oral HygieneMaintaining good oral hygiene not only helps improve your oral health but also the overall health. Often, you may think that poor oral hygiene is only associated with gum disease, bad breath, and tooth decay or sensitivity, however, it can also affect other areas of your body. Inadequate oral hygiene contributes to various serious health problems. Periodontal disease is considered the leading factor linked with aiding chronic conditions. Periodontal disease makes your gums a gateway of harmful bacteria and plaque into the body. Therefore, the importance of ensuring proper oral hygiene routine cannot be overstated. Some of the health problems that poor oral hygiene can cause are:

Heart Disease

Bacteria in the mouth can gain entry into the bloodstream and travel to areas of your heart. The bacteria infect the heart's inner lining, the valves and chambers causing heart disease such as endocarditis. If not treated, the infection becomes fatal. Also, plaque may move from the mouth to your heart, blood vessels, and arteries. As the plaque builds up in your blood vessels, it can clog the arteries and cause blood clots leading to cardiovascular disease.

Periodontal disease may cause inflammation in the mouth hence weakening the ability of the body to utilize insulin and process blood sugar. The inflammation prevents your body from utilizing insulin to convert the sugar into energy. The blood pressure in your body starts to build up due to lack of use of the insulin contributing to diabetes.

There is a correlation between cancer and gum disease with the greatest link being seen between periodontitis and pancreatic cancer as well as oropharyngeal cancer. However, the cause and effect factors haven't been proven scientifically despite the undeniable belief of the relationship by experts. To be on the safe side, it is crucial you maintain good oral hygiene. Talk to our prosthodontic team to find out how you can maintain your oral hygiene or get your gum disease treated.
