The Dangers of Having Missing Teeth

Posted on 12/10/2021 by Dr. Shiotsu
The Dangers of Having Missing TeethOur teeth play so many important roles in our oral and overall health. We may not realize this until they are missing. Most people often think that the greatest effect missing teeth may have is reducing the quality of their smile. While that is an effect, there are much more damaging effects that missing teeth may have on us. On this page, we have highlighted some of the dangers of having missing teeth.

Bone Degeneration

Losing teeth has an adverse effect on the jawbone. Even if it was just a tooth, they each play a role in keeping the jawbone healthy. Each tooth stimulates the jawbone through the root. When we eat and chew, those actions stimulate the jawbone. This stimulation is how the jawbone keeps its form and density. Once we lose a tooth, the bone in that vacant area will gradually lose its density and degenerate into the body. Consequently, this affects the muscles in that area, causing a sag in your facial structure.

Higher Risks of Infections and Disease

Empty tooth sockets easily collect and hide bacteria and particles. When brushing does not clean these spaces completely, they begin to attack the tissues, or even infect surrounding teeth. Such situations may lead to tooth decay or even gum disease.

Bite Problems

Each tooth plays an important role in teeth alignment. They all need the support from each other to keep their position. Once a tooth is missing, it threatens the misalignment of surrounding teeth. These remaining teeth may begin to move into the vacant space, resulting in a crooked appearance. More serious bite problems like bruxism, or even jaw disorder may arise from such misalignments.

While losing teeth may not seem harmful, you will be doing your overall health a favor by replacing them as soon as you can. Thankfully, there are many long-lasting options for teeth replacement. Just call us today to consult with our professionals on the best treatment option for you.
