There are many different restorative dental procedures to choose from but time and time again, crowns are one of the most popular. They can be used to treat a wide array of oral cavity problems. For those teeth which have eroded badly, have had decay, fractured or chipped, crowns can be the answer. They are long-lasting and easy to maintain and offer a finished professional look when placed properly.
What are Crowns Made of?
The natural tooth should be saved whenever possible. When a patient loses a tooth, it can create a whole host of other problems including invasive corrective surgeries which can cost a great deal. Crowns can be placed on top of an injured tooth to repair it or placed on top of dental implants.
Implants are a permanent artificial tooth solution. They are made of three separate pieces. The first is the actual implant which is embedded into the jawbone. Once this has healed a second component known as the abutment is placed on top of the implant. This creates a solid foundation surface for the crown to attach to. The crown is the uppermost section of the implant and the only visible part.
Crowns are typically made of metal, a metal and porcelain combination, or simply porcelain. The metal crowns are typically reserved for the back teeth where they cannot be seen very easily. They are the most durable type of implant and the least expensive. Porcelain is chosen for those teeth which are readily visible because it can be tinted to match any color, so it blends in with the patient's other teeth and remains unnoticed. Porcelain, while resilient, feels natural when biting and can also be shaped to match the general shape and contours of the other teeth in the oral cavity. It is the most widely selected type of crown, especially with our dentist. We can help provide more information at your next visit.
