Are Dentures the Only Replacement Option You Have for Missing Teeth?
Posted on 1/11/2021 by Dr. Shiotsu
Dentures were the go-to choice for replacing missing teeth for many years. They are still a good option for some patients, but many others would prefer something more comfortable, discreet, and easier to clean. Luckily, advances in prosthodontics have given rise to many alternatives to dentures. Here are some other options for replacing missing teeth.
A dental bridge is an excellent option if you are missing one or more teeth in the same area. As their name implies, a bridge “bridges” the gap in your smile in that it consists of a row of prosthetic teeth that attach to your healthy, natural teeth on either side of the gap. A fixed bridge is the most common type of dental bridge, and it involves placing crowns over the two “abutment teeth” on either side of your missing tooth or teeth. These crowns are attached to prosthetic teeth called pontics that replace the actual missing teeth. Fixed bridges are secured in place with dental cement. However, there are also options for removable dental bridges.
Dental implants are considered by many to be the best option for replacing missing teeth. This is because dental implants are surgically placed in your jaw and act as replacement tooth roots, which means that they fully support not only a replacement tooth, but the structural integrity of your jaw as well. Implants are also permanent, while other restorative options may need to be replaced over time. Dental implants can be used to support a crown for a single missing tooth, a bridge for multiple missing teeth, or a set of dentures for patients who are missing a full arch or even all of their teeth.
When Are Dentures Still a Good Option?
Even with the other restorative options that are available today, some people might still prefer traditional dentures. Dentures are more affordable than the above restorative treatments, and they do not require any type of invasive surgery. Dentures are also a good option if you have suffered bone loss in your jaw or if you are not healthy enough for surgery. If you opt for traditional dentures, it is important that you care for them properly and remove them every night.
