Pros and Cons That Come with Choosing Dental Bonding

Posted on 12/21/2020 by Dr. Shiotsu
Pros and Cons That Come with Choosing Dental BondingDental bonding is an option for repairing minor chips and cracks to teeth. If you are interested in dental bonding, here are some pros and cons to take into consideration when making your decision.

Advantages of Dental Bonding

One of the biggest advantages of dental bonding is that it is significantly quicker, more cost-effective, and less invasive than other treatment options for chipped or cracked teeth. Dental bonding can be performed in just one visit to our office, and the process takes less than an hour per tooth. Other ways of repairing chipped or cracked teeth, such as crowns and veneers, require at least two appointments with waiting time in between while your restoration is being manufactured. And with dental bonding, there is no need for the invasive preparation of shaving down your damaged tooth to place a crown or veneer on top.
Cost is a major factor to consider when choosing dental bonding as well. Dental bonding usually costs between 100 to 400 dollars per tooth, while porcelain veneers can be as much as 2,500 dollars per tooth, and a single porcelain crown can cost up to 3,000 dollars.

Disadvantages of Dental Bonding

The main disadvantage of dental bonding is that it is not as durable and long-lasting as other restorative treatments. Dental bonding uses a composite resin material that is not as strong as the porcelain used for veneers and crowns. As a result, bonding typically lasts about three to seven years, whereas veneers and crowns that are properly cared for can last decades.

Also, bonding is usually only applied to a small portion of the tooth, so it can only be used to treat minor chips and cracks. Crowns, on the other hand, cover the entire tooth, so even a severely cracked tooth can be repaired using a crown. Contact our office to discuss the treatment option that is best for you.
