Dentures are artificial teeth and gums that are able to significantly improve your quality of life by restoring teeth functionality and aesthetics; however, it is possible for your dentures to develop an odor if you are not careful. Keep reading to learn how you can tell if your dentures stink, what causes dental odors, and what you can do to get your dentures clean and smelling fresh.
Causes and Cures
Fowl smells are not a difficult thing to notice initially, however, we can become accustom to them over time. The most common sign that your dentures stink is that you experience the same slightly unpleasant smell all the time, not just are you have eaten. The other way to tell is obviously if people complain or keep their distance from you.
It is often possible to detect unpleasant odors on your dentures if you take them out of your mouth and carefully smell them, repeatedly for a few minutes if you are unsure. Denture odor is caused by bacteria building-up on your dentures; this can happen to anyone, and it is usually because you are not properly cleaning your dentures. The following is a list of procedures that you can do to make sure that bacterial growth is kept to a minimum so that it does not lead to unwanted odors: take your dentures out and soak them in a denture cleaner overnight because bacteria grows very quickly while you sleep, clean them very well with a soft-bristle brush before putting them in, and make sure to clean your mouth multiple times per day to keep them clean and less likely to transfer bacteria to your dentures.
It is very important that you not only clean your teeth and gums, but that you also clean the roof and base of your mouth as well as your tongue; an antiseptic mouthwash will also help kill bacteria in places that you missed and decrease their growth rate. These are some of the ways that you can detect odors on your dentures, as well as mitigate the problem.
