Do Sticky Foods Hurt Your Dentures?

Posted on 11/9/2020 by Dr. Shiotsu
Do Sticky Foods Hurt Your Dentures?Dentures are common teeth-replacement structures that provide confidence and necessary support for many people, and while they handle many situations with the same ease as natural teeth, you should still exercise caution while eating sticky foods. Keep reading to learn why denture-wielders are better of avoiding, or limiting, their consumption of foods that are sticky and viscous.

Sticky Situations

Dentures are artificial teeth and gums that fit over your natural gums and adhere to them under most conditions; however, sticky situations can lead to your dentures popping out while you eat, or make it so much harder to get your dentures sparkling clean. The probability of these events happening can be significantly decreased if you avoid foods that tend to adhere to the surface of your teeth; if the food is viscous in addition to being sticky, then it could apply the necessary pressure to your dentures in order to dislodge them.

Sticky candies, such as toffee and caramel, are notorious for getting stuck in tough places to reach; this type of food will drastically add to the time it will take you to clean your dentures. Peanut butter will also get stuck all over your dentures, especially because it spreads very easily. Sticky foods that lead to you chewing with uneven pressure will slightly dislodges your dentures every bite, and doing this action repeatedly may damage your gums and quickly wear-out your denture adhesives, if you use them.

We hope that this blog gives you a good understanding of why it is probably better if you avoid sticky foods; while you may not be able to resist the temptation of a particularly tasty treat mentioned above, it is important for you to clean your dentures immediately to avoid bacterial growth.
