Foods to Never Eat with New Dental Implants

Posted on 10/5/2020 by Dr. Shiotsu
Foods to Never Eat with New Dental ImplantsDental implants can literally change a person's life, giving them a chance to smile as never before and enabling them to enjoy better health and confidence. However, after you have dental implant surgery, you do need to make certain adjustments, especially when it comes to eating meals and snacks. To ensure healing, you need to avoid certain hard foods and substitute them with nutritional and soft choices.

What Foods Are Off-Limits?

After you have implant surgery, the next 14 days become a critical time with respect to recovery. Therefore, don't eat any foods that could delay healing and impair osseointegration. Eating the wrong foods can increase your chances of post-operative complications, including implant shifting. Don't eat carrots, unless they have been shredded in very thin pieces, and stay completely away from hard taco shells, potato chips, corn chips, and crusty breads, such as French bread. You also should avoid steaks or similar types of meat that require a good deal of chewing.

Are There Drinks I Should Avoid?

What you choose to drink is crucial too. Don't drink alcoholic beverages or drinks that are either sugary or acidic. Sip your drink, but don't use a straw, as it may trigger a dental condition known as a dry socket. In addition, any drink that is overly chilled or hot can lead to discomfort and negatively impact recuperation. Stick to milk, bottled water, or herbal teas.

Make it your goal to plan menus that include scrambled eggs, macaroni and cheese, soft breads, oatmeal, and protein drinks without the added sugar. Yogurt, mashed potatoes, soups, and cottage cheese are also good substitutes. We can direct you in your menu and snack planning. Making these adjustments will ensure that you will preserve and maintain your winning new smile. If you have questions about implants, call us anytime. We can answer your questions and set up a time for an appointment and consultation.
