Signs You Need an Upgraded Denture

Posted on 6/20/2019 by Dr. Shiotsu
Signs You Need an Upgraded DentureDentures that are well-constructed and fitted well should generally last the wearer for 7 to 10 years before they need to be replaced. This estimate of life span includes both full and partial dentures.

This doesn't mean that every few years they won't have to be serviced or relined because they will. As you age your jaw changes due to bone loss and other dental issues can have an effect on the way your dentures fit. But the appliance itself is not being replaced, the fit is merely being adjusted.

If you see us regularly for your every six-month visit, we will evaluate your dentures and surrounding structures to see if any adjustments need to be made. If you come less frequently then you will need a few tips on how to tell if your dentures have outlived their useful life.

How Do I Know When to Upgrade My Denture?

One of the most obvious symptoms of a denture problem is the way it sits in your mouth. When you originally received them, they should have had a very tight fit. Talking and eating should not have made them budge. But if you need to upgrade your dentures, you may notice them getting a bit wobbly. Or they may just feel loose. This can happen because over time the bone structure under your dentures deteriorates and the dentures lose their snug fit.

Another sign that you should have your dentures looked at is chronic pain, mostly concentrated in the jaw area or your face. You may also get headaches or tinnitus. This too is due to the changes in the underlying bone structure.

If you notice your dentures are difficult to keep clean, they may have developed hairline cracks. If you would like an evaluation or further information, please contact us. We' are happy to help with your decision.
