Signs You Need a New Set of Dentures

Posted on 11/25/2018 by Dr. Shiotsu
Signs You Need a New Set of DenturesFor many people, the sign that they need dentures is often obvious. They are missing teeth, or their natural teeth no longer function properly. No one likes the idea of getting dentures, but they are a good option for many people. While figuring out when to get the first set of dentures is easy, knowing when it is time to replace them is not as simple.

The Obvious Signs

There are some signs that you need new dentures that are very obvious. When you see these things, it is time to head to our offices to find out what your options are.

•  Chipped, cracked or broken dentures - Damage to the dentures is sometimes repairable, but there are also times when the damage is too extensive. If that is the case, it is best to turn to a new set of dentures
•  Pain and swelling in the gums - When dentures do not fit properly they can cause problems for the gums. It can lead to swelling and pain. It may or may not require a replacement of the dentures, but that is a possibility.
•  Loose dentures - if the dentures are loose in the mouth, it can cause problems with chewing and talking. It is a sign that it is time for new dentures.

The Less Obvious Signs

While there are many obvious signs that it is time to replace dentures, there are also more subtle signs to pay attention to. Dentures do not last forever and some of the signs are a result of the dentures nearing the end of their usefulness.

•  Discoloration - Over time the dentures may get discolored beyond a point where cleaning is possible. Replacement is the best option.
•  Odor - Denture halitosis can cause problems. The best way to deal with bad breath from the dentures can include replacing them.
•  Head, neck or ear pain - This is often a sign that something is not right with the dentures. If the dentures are at fault, a replacement can correct the pain.

Dentures do not last forever. Most people with dentures will have to consider replacing them at some point in time. Knowing when that is makes it easier to get it done.
