Have You Struggled with Denture Sores?

Posted on 10/25/2018 by Dr. Shiotsu
Have You Struggled with Denture Sores?Wearing dentures is not without its challenges. From time to time, the gums underneath the dentures can become irritated, swollen, painful and even develop sores.

If you've struggled with denture sores in the past, or are currently struggling with them, please give us a call. Aside from checking for infection and correct fit, we can give you several tips on how to deal with the discomfort that is sometimes associated with denture wear.

Remedies For Denture Sores

There are many reasons that you may develop denture sores. Usually, though, it's just a soreness caused by the dentures pressing into the nerves of the gums. Although your gums appear smooth, they're really bumpy and irregular and you need to be sure that your denture plate is adjusted to fit you correctly.

If it's not, that can cause you to have lots of unnecessary pain. From time to time, the gums under the dentures can become infected because of bacteria, so if you're feeling pain, the first step is to give us a call.

Once we've determined that you do not have an infection, and that your dental plate is fitted appropriately, if you're still experiencing soreness there are some home remedies you can try.

Make sure that when you're brushing at home you're using a soft bristled toothbrush. Brush your dentures as well as your gums because it too can develop plaque and bacteria. A gentle gum massage can also help if you're feeling sensitive and still adjusting to dentures.

Topical gels or creams that are made specifically for oral pain can be used on the gums, as well as an aloe vera gel that you can apply to the dentures daily to help soothe your gums. A salt water rinse can be helpful in reducing inflammation as well.

Most importantly, if you are experiencing pain and sores from your dentures, please, call us immediately. We want to help you find the remedy as quickly as possible.
