Your dentures play a crucial role. They restore your ability to eat and speak, and give you a complete smile. In order to do their job, dentures require proper care, which includes soaking them overnight in denture solution. Soaking is only a part of the equation.

Why is Denture Care Important?

Taking the time to clean your dentures every day is important for preventing a buildup of plaque and bacteria, which could otherwise lead to:

•  Stains.
•  Bad breath.
•  Irritation to your gum tissue.
•  Infections, such as gum disease or candidiasis (yeast infection).
•  Tartar, or hardened plaque, which can build up on dentures just like natural teeth.

Cleaning Your Dentures

Your dentures should be rinsed off after every meal. At night, lay a towel on your counter or fill your sink with water, which will cushion your dentures should you drop them. Brush your dentures with a soft bristled brush and either soap and water or denture paste.

Toothpaste contains abrasives, which can scratch your dentures. Then, before you go to bed, set your dentures to soak in a cleaning solution. Before putting them back in, be sure to rinse them off.

Don't Forget Your Mouth and Gums

Even if you are missing all of your teeth, taking care of your mouth and gums is important, as bacteria can still cause infections, such as gum disease. Using a soft bristled brush, gently brush your gums, tongue, cheeks and even the roof of your mouth, both after you take your dentures out at night, and before you put them back in the next morning.

If you wear partial dentures, brush and floss your natural teeth as normal and be sure to pay special attention to the areas surrounding the clasps that hold your partial denture in place. Do not wear your dentures overnight. Finally, a well-balanced diet, filled with nutrient rich foods, to ensure optimal health.

Taking proper care of your dentures ensures not only that they will remain in good working order, but that your mouth will remain healthy as well. If you have any questions about the care of your dentures, be sure to consult with your dentist.
