What to Do When Teeth Cannot Get Crowns

Following large fillings or root canals, it is common for the tooth to get a crown. This is a small cap that is placed over the tooth to protect it. It keeps the tooth strong, holds the filling in place, and lets you keep using the tooth as you always have.

However, if your tooth is not able to get a crown, you may need an alternative to restore function to your mouth. Not all teeth are great candidates for crowns, so it is important that you find out before assuming a crown can be placed.

Which Teeth Cannot Get Crowns?

Teeth that break very near the gum line are typically not good candidates for dental crowns. Also, teeth that are not totally healed following some type of dental trauma may also not be good candidates for crowns. It is going to be up to us when you come in as to whether or not the original tooth is strong enough to hold a crown, or not.

What Should You Do if Your Tooth Cannot Get a Traditional Crown?

There are two things you can do. First, you can opt for a non-traditional crown. This means doing a bit more restorative work before getting a crown. Usually there is a post that goes into your remaining tooth that the new crown can work with.

This helps the crown stay strong and attached, even if there is very little tooth remaining. Second, you can opt for a different type of restorative device. You can get a bridge, or a dental implant, for example, but that means having the tooth extracted.

Come in and talk with us before any procedure is done. We will look at the tooth and let you know if the tooth can be salvaged with a procedure and a crown, or if another procedure would be best.

If you have any questions or would like to schedule an appointment, please call us at (206) 232-3600 today.
