How to Prolong the Life of Dental Crowns

Posted on 7/23/2017 by Dr. Shiotsu
Dental crowns are offered at Goichi Shiotsu, DDS.
Dental crowns are a very important part of your mouth. If the crown wasn't there, it could leave you with a tooth that wasn't as structurally sound or functional as the surrounding teeth. They are able to withstand a lot of abuse from chewing and biting, but they still need to be cared for properly. If you want your dental crowns to last as long as possible, it is important that you care for them properly. Here are some tips to make sure your dental crowns last as long as possible.

Keeping Dental Crowns As Long As Possible

The most important thing when it comes to prolonging the life of your dental crown is to make sure you take proper care of your mouth. If you have a crown over a tooth that’s decaying, it is going to put the crown at risk. This means making sure that you brush and floss as recommended, and seeing your dentist every six months, too. Not eating hard or chewy foods is another way to prolong the life of your dental crown. By avoiding sticky foods, you don’t put any excess strain on your crown, which will leave it in place longer. Hard foods can hurt your crown in much the same way as your natural teeth, causing them to crack. This should be avoided at all costs.

The more care you take now to protect your dental crowns, the longer they will remain in your mouth. This means taking less time to have them replaced in the future, and it also means that your teeth beneath the crown are more likely to remain intact for a much longer period of time. To be sure that you are doing everything you can to protect your dental crowns, ask your prosthodontist during your next appointment.
