What Happens if You Wear Poorly Fitting Dentures?Ill-fitting dentures are not only uncomfortable, they can be damaging to your overall oral health. Regularly scheduled checkups with our office will not only help us ensure that your dentures are fitting properly, but they will help us catch problems before they start.

Why Do Dentures Fit Poorly?

There are several reasons that your dentures may not be fitting properly. One reason is that they may have begun to dry out. Properly caring for your dentures by brushing them nightly and storing them in water overnight or for long periods of time if you are not wearing them, will help ensure that your dentures do not become warped.

If you have accidentally left them out for an extended period of time, they may not fit well in your mouth. This can lead not only to discomfort and sores on your gums, but to complications like bone loss and infection.

When you wear poorly fitting dentures, they rub unnecessarily on the gums causing irritation that can lead to sores and infection. This can be a serious problem and can be harmful not only to your oral health, but your overall health as well. Additionally, ill-fitting dentures will not provide the proper support to your jaw bone, which can lead to bone loss over time.

Aside from these oral health problems, ill-fitting dentures can be embarrassing to wear. Imagine talking or eating while your dentures are slipping around in your mouth, it is not a fun time.

If you are having problems with your dentures, and they are not fitting correctly on your gums, please call our office right away and schedule a checkup. We want to help you be as comfortable as possible while helping you maintain optimal oral health. We look forward to seeing you soon and helping you restore your healthy smile!
